Swimwear Shopping Tips

For obvious reasons, shopping for swimwear is probably one of the least favorite things to do in the summer -- but it's necessary if you want to toss out your old bikini and find an updated suit that looks hot and feels cool. Are you going on vacation, to the beach, or plan on just lounging around on your day off? We've got some shopping tips to help you find a swimsuit that looks great not only on the rack but yourself as well. Let's get started...

Check out Return Policies

Shop only at stores you trust and always save your receipts. Closely check out the return policy on swimwear, and ask questions if necessary. Most stores will accept returns on swimsuits if they haven't been worn and still have the tags attached. If your suit is defective, you can probably still return it if it has been worn. A liberal return policy is desirable if you're shopping online, so you don't encounter problems with a suit that doesn't fit.

Look for signs in the store saying such things as "all sales are final." You may see these signs on clearance racks indicating you cannot return swimwear that has been marked down. You're getting a good deal, but be sure to try on the suit before you buy it.

Get Help

Take adequate time and shop with a trusted friend to swap ideas with. Honest opinions sometimes take a hit on the ego, but will help you avoid a fashion disaster that can cause considerable embarrassment when you're trying to impress that special guy. Likewise, tell your friend which suits don't look the best on her, and why. Soften the blow and praise her when she dons beachwear that works well for her figure.

Trying on Swimwear

For your own protection, keep your undergarments on when trying on swimwear -- particularly your panties. Just the thought of putting on swimwear that has been worn "au-natural" by others is an ultimate "gross-out." Protection strips in the crotch area will insure that you have a sanitary suit after you purchase it.

How to Choose Swimsuits that Flatter Your Figure

To look your best at the beach or pool, play around with styles and patterns that will minimize your flaws and maximize your assets! Time is money, so by knowing your problem areas, you can avoid the swimwear that's not going to do a thing for you -- and focus on the swimsuits that best suit your shape. Look for beachwear that is comfortable and won't fall off while you're swimming. After all, this is swimwear so it should serve that purpose.

Tips to Look Slimmer

Dress monochromatic and choose dark colors such as black and navy blue. Spandex adds extra stretch needed for slack and will make you appear thinner. Select from mix & match coordinated tops and bottoms to ensure you buy the proper size.

Generally, swimwear runs small, so you'll probably need to buy a size or two larger. Don't fret, you can cut the size tags off if you're unwilling to wear a suit bearing a larger size. What's important is that you find a suit that conveys your style, confidence and personality.

Large Bust

For large breasts, get adequate support for full-coverage. Choose a halter or molded underwire top to ensure that you won't hang out in all the wrong places. Racerback style straps and a wide band underneath the bust line provide extra security for those who are over-endowed.

Butt too Big

If your butt is too big for your liking, there's many alternatives available. Not only are they stylish, sporty boy-cut bottoms will cover your rear while adding comfort. Skirted bikini bottoms are a sexy option to skimpy bikini briefs, and they're always hot in beach fashions.

Select a top that is classy and draws the eye upwards -- away from your large butt. Thin, diagonal stripes are hot this season and very convenient for creating illusions. Keep in mind that horizontal stripes are a no-no for a too large anything and vertical stripes can accentuate unwanted bulges.

Curvy Curves

For an hourglass figure, consider a tankini and hipster bottoms. Wide straps ensure you're supported on top while a boyish cut covers areas you'd rather not show. Play up your finest curves with a one-piece cutout that's sure to be an eyecatcher.

Large Stomach

Minimize a bulging belly with a one-piece suit in a dark color or splashy pattern. If your heart is set on a two piece, find a top that falls over your briefs. It will hide your tummy and elongate your torso. Swimsuits that gather at the waist are instant stomach slimmers while adding a trendy touch to your overall look.

Swimwear Trends

So what's hot for summer 2008? The trendiest swimwear is in fruity splash patterns, wild prints and retro shapes. Thin stripes add color and diagonal stripes give the most-wanted slimming effect. What's good about fashion designers is that they are creating suits for the modern woman who has beautiful curves and knows exactly what she wants.
